How is Wellness viewed?

Have you noticed how people have changed most health aspects to Wellness over time instead of sticking with one category to another? They like to group the list together because Wellness can mean a great deal in many categories but yet, all contribute to the state of Well-being.

I am going to explain many aspects of Wellness and how it can relate to us all. The state of our Well-being begins and ends with us taking the initial approach to work on our health to be the best version of ourselves. Once you realize how each category is relatable then you can start examining which areas, we might have issues in and get a deeper understanding of where the work begins.

So, let us GET STARTED on this approach.

Here are 7 Wellness aspects that are critical:

·       Spiritual Wellness

·       Emotional Wellness

·       Physical Wellness

·       Environmental Wellness

·       Occupational Wellness

·       Social Wellness

·       Cognitive or Intellectual Wellness

How I like to view Wellness is we have to make our own choices, which include lifestyles, behaviors, and the pursuit of activities, but these all are or can be influenced by the 7 Wellness List in the world we live in.

Some like to distinguish Wellness as being in good health, being happy, or just a state of well-being. I like to think of Wellness as actively making good choices and being aware so I can have a state of Wellness outcome.

I want to explain a bit about each of the 7 Wellness aspects and a few examples we can relate to.

  • Spiritual Wellness can be defined as the process of seeking purpose and meaning within our lives. Some of these examples are prayers, daily devotions, yoga, meditations, et cetera. Spiritual Wellness is classified as very important so we carefully assess our beliefs, values, and our morals to stay well.

  • Emotional Wellness can be defined as how a person can handle their life encounters experiences and emotions. A person’s emotional state is very vital to most situations and how their capacity level how is handled. Some examples but not limited to are being relaxed, feeling great about whom you are, saying “no” to things or situations that make you feel uncomfortable, feeling content, and having a good support system so you have the ability to talk with someone.

  • Physical Wellness can be defined as taking care of our bodies for functioning and optimal health. To fully engage in our daily activities of life is the ability to get through it with little to no stress and give our bodies the essentials we need on a daily basis. A few examples include eating well, a sleep routine, personal hygiene habits, relaxation, and keeping some form of activity going in one’s life.

  • Environmental Wellness can be defined by your physical, social, and mental aspects of well-being. The environment contributes to how we feel through the day through our social gatherings, the weather, and what mood we seem to be in at that moment. We tend to look upon nature and how we can incorporate that into our lives by being inside or outdoors. This can help us feel more relaxed or energized based on our surroundings. Environmental could be finding locations where we live, study, and work. Using sunshine as a natural resource can help improve our moods.

  • Occupational Wellness at times can be financially rewarding to some people, finding a balance between leisure and work in a way that promotes personal and health satisfaction. This allows us to have contentment in doing exactly what we want and make it as comfortable in our work lives. This shows a healthy state of wellness. A few examples include organizing and planning work around social gatherings. Applying interests, talents, and special skills to a job and getting along with other individuals in the surrounding environment because it suits you. Balancing home and work life can be rewarding if you are happy with your Occupational Wellness.

  • Social Wellness is engaging and connecting with the communities and others in meaningful ways. This connection can have positive connections with everyone that occupies our lives. Personally and socially balancing our time. Maintaining strong relationships is being comfortable with who we are and keeping positive people in our lives helps with social wellness. We should take care of ourselves while we may help others.

  • Cognitive and Intellectual Wellness is the ability to expand a person’s knowledge and a person’s ability in creative thinking skills. Exercising the brain for continuous learning is part of wellness.  Becoming social, exercising, reading, and trying something new are a few examples.

From all of these 7 Wellness aspects, we want to have the best optimal health to be well.

Go on and ask yourself which one you might be struggling with.

Ooh…me First, I need to work on Environmental and Occupational Wellness in my life.

Needless, to say it affects my mood deeply if my environment is off because it is not to my liking. Occupational Wellness is difficult for me because I am a workaholic to a fault. Seems I would rather work than find leisure time elsewhere. I tend to like my work and find it to be my leisure time when others look at me as being unsocial able. Even when my job ends at 5p I will look for more work just so I can stay ahead, or I will get busy doing projects at home. Does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?

I know I need to work on these areas and trust me it’s evident that there must be a change or life will pass me by before I had a chance to experience other joys that I have not encountered yet.

To sum this up a bit….

Healthcare is different from Wellness. Wellness is a (proactive approach and salutogenic) and (Healthcare is a reactive approach and pathogenic).

There have been known possibilities that if we can create a solid foundation in the 7 Wellness aspects for the present and future, we could either prevent or overcome many diseases.

Let us all work on ourselves to improve health benefits and enhance our quality of life with a sense of well-being. Wellness is a key factor, and all 7 parts take an active role in how we can equip ourselves to have a positive outlook on our body, soul, and mind. A healthy lifestyle is a step toward a better future with our family, friends, and most importantly to yourself.
